Dr. Ariel Rivera-Aguerri is a Board Certified General Surgeon by the Costa Rican College of Surgeons and Physicians. He graduated with honors Cum Laude at the medical school from the Autonomous University of Central America. He did his specialty in General Surgery at the University of Costa Rica after achieve the highest score in the national exam to obtain a place as a resident. He completed a University Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery at University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. He did a Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery Mini-fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Rivera-Aguerri has a worldwide training & experience, including USA, Europe and Latin American.
Dr. Ariel Rivera-Aguerri has an extensive experience in Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric & General Surgery. He has been a pioneer in advanced and complex laparoscopic surgeries in Costa Rica. Dr Rivera- Aguerri participated in the introduction of the Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery, the Laparoscopic Colon Surgery, the Hernia Surgery and the Metabolic Surgery for non-obese patients.
Dr. Rivera-Aguerri is recognized as an active and actualized Bariatric and Laparoscopic surgeon in the country with an extensive number of surgical cases performed. He has performed more than 1800 laparoscopic procedures, including pancreatic, spleen, Roux-in-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, metabolic surgery, colon, gastric and hernia surgery, among others.
Dr. Rivera-Aguerri is an active international speaker as well as an academic surgeon. . Currently, Dr. Rivera is the Chief of the Surgery Service at Hospital Cima San Jose, Director of the Laparoscopic Surgical Center and is an active member of the Directive Council and professor in the National Residency Program for General Surgery from the Universidad de Costa Rica. He is member of the Board of Directors and Professor in the General Surgery National Residence Program (University of Costa Rica), Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine (Hispanoamerican University. Costa Rica), Professor of Semiology (Autonomous University of Central America. Costa Rica) and Member Founder & Professor of the Center of Training and Investigation in Laparoscopic and Related Techniques (CIELTA) Costa Rica. At the moment he is doing a Doctoral Degree in Medical Science, PhD at University of Salamanca. Salamanca, Spain and a Master Degree in Human Anatomy at University of Medical Science, San José, Costa Rica.
Dr. Rivera-Aguerri is member founder and one of the bariatric surgeons of The Bariatric Center of Costa Rica. This center is the first surgical group in the country with a multidisciplinary approach in the management of the obesity, a program with very high rate of success.
His credentials are recognized by relevant and important worldwide medical associations, among others: Fellow American College of Surgeon (FACS), Fellow International College of Surgeon (FICS), Society American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), Latin American Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (ALACE) and European Association for Transluminal Surgery (EATS). Dr. Rivera-Aguerri develops his surgical practice at Cima Hospital in San José, Costa Rica.
