Dr. Ariel Rivera Aguerri is a General Surgeon certified by the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica.
He graduated with Cum Laude honors in the Escuela Autónoma de Ciencias Médicas of the Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica. He got his specialization in General Surgery from the Universidad de Costa Rica after getting the highest score in the national test applied for resident positions.
Dr. Rivera Aguerri received his Diploma on Laparoscopic Surgery from the Instituto Europeo de Tele-Cirugía and the Universidad Louis Pasteur in Strasburg, France and made a Mini-Fellowship in Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery in the Southwestern Medical Center of the University of Texas in Dallas. Dr. Rivera Aguerri has been trained worldwide, including places like the United States, Europe and Latin America.
Dr. Ariel Rivera Aguerri has a solid experience in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric-metabolic surgery and general surgery. He has pioneered advanced and complex laparoscopic surgical procedures in Costa Rica. Dr. Rivera Aguerri participated in the introduction of bariatric and metabolic surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery, different types of laparoscopic surgeries for hernia and metabolic surgery for non-obese patients.
Dr. Ariel Rivera Aguerri is recognized as an active and up-dated Bariatric and Laparoscopic surgeon in the country with an extensive number of surgical cases performed. He has completed over 1500 laparoscopic procedures including pancreas surgery, spleen surgery, gastric by-pass, adjustable gastric band, gastric sleeve, colon surgery, gastric surgery and hernia surgery, among others.
Dr. Ariel Rivera Aguerri is an active international speaker and a recognized academic surgeon. Currently, Dr. Rivera is the Chief of the Surgery Service at Hospital Cima San Jose and is an active member of the Directive Council and professor in the National Residency Program for General Surgery from the Universidad de Costa Rica. He is an associate professor in Emergency Medicine in the Universidad Hispanoamericana in Costa Rica.
He is a professor in Semiologics in the Universidad Autónoma de Centroamerica and a founding member of the Centro de Entrenamiento e Investigación en Laparoscopía y Técnicas Afines (Training and Research Center in Laparoscopy and Related Techniques—CIELTA) in Costa Rica. Currently, he is completing his PhD in Medical Sciences in the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain, with a Masters in Human Anatomy from the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas in San José, Costa Rica.
Dr. Ariel Rivera Aguerri is a founding member and one of the surgeons of the Bariatric Center in Costa Rica. This is a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery with high indexes of success due to the multidisciplinary approach provided for obesity management.
